About the artist

Rebecca Annan is a fine artist producing evocative paintings of landscapes and still life.

She was long-listed for the 2022 Jackson’s Painting Prize for her Comfort Collection, a series most recently featured in Art Seen Magazine 2023.

She was raised in the seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea, Essex in the United Kingdom. In 2003 she attended the Colchester Institute and completed a Foundation Diploma in Fine Art. Following her artistic education she trained and worked as a Paediatric Nurse for over a decade. During this time she continued to engage in her artistic practice. She returned to art on a full time basis at the beginning of 2021. She works from her home studio in Wales where she lives with her husband and two children.

Artist Statement

I seek to convey my appreciation for the beauty in my immediate and ever changing world around me. As someone with a faith that everything in creation is designed but temporary, my work pays particular attention to the idea of impermanence. Often this focus is on the impermanence of light and its influence, converting a fleeting moment and its affects on colour into an enduring work of art.

I document my observations in photographs and reclaim the moment in a drawing or a painting. The images transform into a truthful representation of my discoveries for posterity.

I work predominantly in oil pastel, however, I also enjoy working in graphite, charcoal, watercolour and oils. When deciding on what medium to work with I allow my creative instincts to respond to the reference image. Details are added at the final stage to lure the viewer into an intimate proximity with the work.

As a neuro-diverse artist, creativity caters for my need for introspection and focus. When I am charmed by my environment, I often discover beauty where it is least expected or may be overlooked. By recalling my experiences of contentment in sincere responses to my environment I am able to honour my appreciation of the little things.

My work embodies joyful recollections and urges to evoke similar memories personal to the viewer, reminding them of our connection as humans.
